Auto Insurance 101: Insurance Terms You Need to Know

At Wenatchee Insurance Agency in Wenatchee, WA, we believe consumers are entitled to know as much about their insurance policies as possible. This knowledge empowers you to make the best decisions to financially protect you and your family in the event of a car accident.

The world of auto insurance is laden with many technical terms that, let’s be honest, can be quite confusing. So, we’ve gathered a rundown of common terms you might encounter on your policy to help you better understand their meaning.

Liability Coverage

Liability coverage safeguards your finances in the event that you are found responsible for causing an accident. Without this protection, you may face lawsuits that could drain everything you’ve worked so hard for.

Collision Coverage

Collision coverage covers damage to your vehicle caused by a collision with another object or person. It pays up to the value of your vehicle minus the deductible.

Comprehensive Coverage

Also known as "other than collision" coverage, comprehensive coverage protects you from loss if your car suffers damage such as theft, vandalism, fire, flooding, collision with an object, or an animal accidentally running across the roadway. In essence, comprehensive coverage caters to a broad range of damages, minus the deductible, other than those resulting from a collision or circumstances mentioned in the policy conditions page.

Comprehensive and collision coverages are often called “full coverage insurance.”

Insurance Deductibles

An insurance deductible represents the amount you are obligated to pay out of pocket before your insurance policy comes into effect and you start paying for a covered claim. The deductible amount is at your discretion. However, remember that lower deductibles result in higher premium payments and vice versa.

Other Auto Insurance Terms

You may also encounter the term “gap insurance” on your policy. This term refers to the difference between your vehicle’s value and the amount you owe on it in the event of a total loss. Another term is the "declarations page". The declarations page outlines the essential details of your auto insurance policy, including your name, policy number, vehicle, validity dates, policy limits, and deductibles.
